Heh: Cool gadget, dumb idea
"If man and machine are going to coexist, I suppose cities should carve up public sidewalks with separate Segway lanes."
Maybe that's what Steve Jobs meant when he said the cities would be rebuilt to accommodate Segways.

Uh oh: A "Perfect Marriage" for Microsoft?
Microsoft fields a few questions about their aquisition of Connectix. I don't know about you, but whenever a Microsoft rep starts refuting claims made by an interviewer, I get nervous. Just a quick tip for Microsoft, simply stating that popular opinion is wrong doesn't reassure anyone of your motives.

Fire 2: Opera won't perform on Microsoft phones
Opera takes another swipe at Microsoft. This time, however, they may have hit the software giant in a much more tender area. Namely small device browsing.
I'm beginning to wonder if all this back-biting is simply a latent bid by Opera to be bought out by Microsoft. It would certainly improve the likelihood of Opera surviving for a little while longer. I guess the real question is how long Microsoft can put up with such a little company thumbing its nose toward them in the press.

Memories: Why do schools encourage kids to speed recklessly at lunchtime?
When I was in high school we had an open campus, but were only given 35 minutes for lunch. I suppose that limit was intended to curtail long-distance lunches, but it didn't really work out that way.
Our town was too small to have a McDonald's or Wendy's so we would often drive to a neighboring town instead. Driving 15+ miles in 35 minutes is pretty tough when you add the time spent in the drive thru. Thinking back it's amazing we never ended up in an accident ourselves.
Capricious youth.

Hmm: Instant Internet access before you boot Windows
The uses of this sort of "instant on" technology are quite intriguing. We'll have to see how it plays in the OEM channels. My gut reaction is that Dell, Gateway, et al probably won't be overly interested until Microsoft gives it's blessing which isn't very likely. In the end, it would be all too easy for Microsoft to block such PC's from running WinXP, claiming BIOS incompatibilities, and thus devalue the products in the eyes of consumers.

Hmm: What Symantec Knew But Didn't Say
I'm decidedly torn on this issue. If I were someone in danger of being bitten by the latest bug sweeping the 'net, I would certainly appreciate Symantec sharing their knowledge within the security community. That said, I would be pretty pissed as a Symantec DeepSight customer if all the "first alert" information I was paying top dollar for was also distributed to everyone else free of charge.
I can't see any clearly drawn line in the sand on this one.

Hmm: Here's what companies will be buying
I wonder how Microsoft is handling this news. In years past there would have been at least two Microsoft products or upgrades involved in this type of article. It seems like more and more companies are getting tired of the licensing treadmill and that is, as they say, a good thing.

Yep: German registrar bans Web site
That's one of the downsides to using Joker. In section 5i of their Terms and Conditions they state very plainly that "[t]he customer must avoid any measures which violate prevailing laws of the Federal Republic of Germany." The owner(s) of the offending site apparently didn't read the agreement before submitting their registration request.
Another downside, which I wasn't aware of until recently, is that Joker makes transferring domains tedious at best. Their now infamous "5 day window" rule has caused no end of problems for defecting customers. If I had it to do over again, I would probably use another low-cost alternative such as GoDaddy instead of Joker.

Amen: Out of the Slammer
Like many others, I had taken the threat of "cyber-terrorism" with a large grain of salt. But where the interdependencies of multiple systems connected to the Internet make it possible for a worm to shut down normal operations of an emergency dispatch center by accident, it does make me wonder what could happen if someone launched a coordinated attack on purpose.
He took the words right out of my mouth. When such a simple worm (376 bytes to be exact) can infect all vulnerable systems in just over ten minutes it tends to open your eyes.
